In a major step toward modernizing travel documentation, the Ministry of Home Affairs has officially launched a new ten-year e-Passport, equipped with an embedded electronic chip designed to enhance security and streamline border crossings.
The upgraded passport, which took effect today, February 10, 2025, brings a host of improvements, including advanced security features and a fresh design reflecting the nation’s One Guyana theme. The Ministry also confirmed that an online application system is in development, aiming to simplify the process for applicants in the near future.
More Options, Greater Convenience
Citizens can now choose between a five-year or ten-year passport, offering flexibility based on their travel needs. Pricing remains unchanged, with the five-year passport costing $6,000, while the newly introduced ten-year version is priced at $12,000.
A standout feature of the new passport is its built-in electronic chip, which brings Guyana in line with global standards for secure travel documents. This upgrade not only enhances authentication at border control but also reduces the chances of fraud or identity theft.
Government Pushes for Digital Transformation
For years, Guyanese citizens have voiced frustration over the long lines and inefficient manual application system at the Central Passport Office. Responding to these concerns, the Ministry has announced that a digital transformation initiative is underway, with plans to introduce an online platform for passport applications. Once implemented, this system will allow individuals to apply remotely, reducing wait times and eliminating the need for in-person visits.
Stronger Security Measures
As part of this modernization effort, all applicants will now be required to undergo biometric enrollment, including fingerprint scanning. This additional layer of security further strengthens document authenticity and helps prevent identity-related fraud.
Additionally, in an effort to prevent abuse of the passport system, the government is reviewing the process for replacing lost or damaged passports. While the current policy remains unchanged for now, future revisions may introduce longer waiting periods for replacements to discourage fraudulent claims and ensure greater accountability.
A Transition Period with More Updates to Come
The Central Immigration and Passport Office has urged citizens to remain patient as these upgrades are implemented. Further updates—including the official activation of the online application platform—will be announced in due course.
